Aya grew up in a small town in her home country in East Africa. When she was 18 years old, there was increasing political tension which has led to feelings of insecurity for her and her family. The situation became unsafe and her father went missing. Her family decided to attempt to seek refuge and establish a better life elsewhere. Aya’s family began the unpredictable and potentially dangerous journey into the unknown of Egypt. Aya is still unsure of what happened to her father. She arrived in Australia as a refugee in 2014.
